SPOTLIGHT ON THE LIVING: XERNONA CLAYTON AND THE TRUMPET AWARDS

This trailblazing woman that you see is Xernona Clayton whose vision fifteen years ago of having an award show highlighting the achievements of African-Americans who have been left out of history culminated in the creation of the annual Trumpet Awards.
This woman in 1967 became the first Black person to have her own television show in the south and she later moved to Turner Broadcasting into the original programing division where she was also the only Black person there. It was at TBS that she concieved the idea of the Trumpet Awards and where it was shown for many years. She was a close friend and confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife Coretta.
This year's Trumpet Awards was held on January 13th and will be broadcast on March 1st.
