IN MEMORIAM: THE PASSING OF AN ICON OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT: JOHNNIE CARR

Another warrior in our fight for freedom has passed on to be with the ancestors. Johnnie Carr who was a childhood friend of Rosa Parks and was one of the key leaders of the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 died this past friday at the age of 97. She was not well known like her good friend Parks or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. but she was no less important.

In fact she succeeded King as the leader of the Mongomery Improvement Association, the organization formed during the boycott and held the position until her death.

It is a shame that so many people did not know of this great woman until her death. We must ensure that we honor our elders in the struggle and record their deeds before they depart from this earth.

Goodbye Mrs. Carr and God bless you.
